Authentic Movement
Authentic Movement (AM) is one of the major approaches in Dance Movement Therapy (DMT) or Body Oriented Psychotherapy, as recently referred in the UK.
AM, being developed by Mary Starks Whitehouse in 1950s, was originally named “Movement from within”. It is technique where the body is used as a metaphor bridging conscious and unconscious mind through moving eyes-closed in the presence of a witness. When practiced in group setting, a “mover” reaches the rich resources of both individual and collective mind through his/her own personal movement experience as wello as “witnessing” provided by the facilitator and other members of the group. Different layers of the “self” will be unfolded while moving “eyes closed”. Merging feelings, sensations and associated thoughts are followed by individual transition and witnessing periods, making the unconscious material safely available to the conscious mind.

The workhsop is organized by the Beyoglu Istanbul Section of CID-UNESCO and the Dora Stratou Theater. It is an introduction to the AM approach, followed by practice as duos and as a group. Each participant will have a choice between:
- Moving, or not moving (only witnessing)
- Moving with open, or with closed eyes
